Do you have a high school Senior (or Junior?) heading to college this fall? Would you like to have them arrive knowing a few “pro tips” that can both make the transition to college smoother and help them begin succeeding at college sooner? I have been a professor of political science and of environmental studies at the University of Oregon since 1993. I also was a visiting professor of international relations at Stanford University from 1999 to 2001.* I received my undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Masters of Public Policy and PhD in Public Policy from Harvard University (my sons joke that I have been in college WAY too long). I have taught thousands of students over that time, and watched hundreds of kids succeed in amazing ways but have also seen hundreds of others stumble in their first year or two as they “learned the ropes” of success in college. I have mentored both types of students and can help your college bound student learn how to succeed in college, whether they are heading off to a local community college, a small liberal arts college, or a big university.
I offer two types of “Succeeding at College” training:
Part 1: 2 hour seminar on “Succeeding at College” for groups of no more than 10 students. In this seminar, I will cover topics including:
- How to turn professors into mentors, whether your college has 900 or 10,000 undergrads
- Strategies for reading at the college level, when there is too much to read and too little time
- Tracking assignment due dates well enough to do the extra credit work
- Selecting classes and selecting professors
- Tricks for writing efficiently, so you can focus on the content of your papers
- Knowing the final exam on the first day of class
- Rate: $150 per student
Part 2: 1 hour individual or small-group question and answer sessions where your student can ask any question they have about success in college.
Rates
- Individual 2-hour session: $200 per person
- 2-4 person 2-hour session: $150 per person
